Smoke-Free Diboll Survey Results

Date:

The Coalition, in partnership with the Tobacco Prevention & Control Coalition, recently conducted a community readiness survey for the residents of Diboll regarding their opinions on a smoke-free community.

Diboll residents are overwhelmingly in favor of a smoke-free Diboll.  Key survey results:

  • 89.8 percent of Diboll residents agree that local governments have an obligation to protect public health.
  • 84.7 percent of Diboll residents agree that all workers should be protected from the exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • 84.1 percent of Diboll residents agree that Diboll should have a strong municipal ordinance to protect children and adults from secondhand smoke.
  • 87.8 percent of Diboll residents agree that exposure to secondhand smoke is a moderate to serious health hazard.

Currently the residents in 68 cities across the state of Texas enjoy a smoke-free environment in all public places because of a smoke-free ordinance in their city. A smoke-free city ordinance ensures that all individuals are protected from health hazards such as lung cancer, heart disease and respiratory infections that are linked to exposure to secondhand smoke.

“Research shows that secondhand smoke is a serious health hazard that causes disease and death in children and nonsmoking adults,” said Sharon Kruk, The Coalition’s Executive Director. “Through our community-readiness survey, we set out to determine whether or not the residents of Diboll, Texas were interested in a smoke-free community. Clearly, the results of the survey show that they are ready to have that protection.  The Coalition is here to support that effort.”

Angelina County is ranked 189 out of 232 counties in a recent County Health Rankings report with high rates of adult tobacco-users. With the help of the TPCC grant, The Coalition is working to decrease adult smoking rates and continue lowering youth tobacco rates to ensure even better health outcomes for the County.
