Bench Play Fuels Win over Bucs

Angelina College’s Roadrunners closed out their regular season at home on Saturday with a huge win over the Blinn College Buccaneers.

Next stop: The Region XIV Conference Tournament in Jacksonville.

AC’s bench played a pivotal role in the ‘Runners’ 71-56 win over the Bucs in the home finale at Shands Gymnasium. Edoardo Buffo hit for 17 points, going 3-for-4 from three-point range, 3-for-3 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Kevin Jamieson scored six points, with all three buckets occurring within a two-minute span to help AC extend its lead.

Caleb Johnson also scored 17 points, and Quandre Bullock notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Raeshaun Ambris added 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Facing a Buc team with a noticeable size advantage, the Roadrunners nevertheless beat the Bucs to the boards, finishing with a 43-23 rebounding advantage.

The win leaves AC’s regular-season record at 13-15, 9-10. The Roadrunners now await seeding for the conference tournament; AC will play on Tuesday’s opening day of the tourney, with opponent and time to be announced by Monday.

Gary Stallard
Sports Information Director Gary Stallard, who also serves as a Liberal Arts Instructor, begins his eleventh season with Angelina College. Following a career as a U.S. Marine, Stallard completed his bachelor’s degree at Stephen F. Austin University, where he majored in English and Journalism. For more than 16 years, he has worked as a sports writer/columnist/photographer for the Lufkin Daily News; he continues to contribute free-lance articles on occasion. Stallard has won several awards for writing, including the Golden Hoops Award for basketball writing in 2003, Regional Sports Writer of the Year in 2004, and the Texas Press Association’s first-place award for column writing in 2007 and in 2014. He has also done basketball, football and baseball radio and live streaming play-by- play and color commentary for an ESPN affiliate. Currently Stallard serves as play-by-play broadcaster for AC basketball, baseball and softball games. Prior to arriving at Angelina College, Stallard taught English at Lufkin High School for four years. He currently teaches Developmental Writing classes at AC. He and his wife Susan live in Lufkin.
