Master Gardner Training Classes Beginning Soon

Date:

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Angelina County is now taking applications for its Master Gardener Intern Training Class.

Each year in county offices across the nation, Master Gardener volunteer training is conducted by AgriLife Extension for adults interested in gardening, horticulture and related topics.

Currently there are 28 certified Master Gardener volunteers in the Angelina County Master Gardener program. Master Gardeners are volunteers for the local Extension office, providing research based information to folks in their own county through Extension educational programs.

Current projects in Angelina County include school gardens, plant trials, demonstration gardens for the public, numerous seminars and more.

Master Gardener classes address topics ranging from plant growth and development to plant diseases, insects, soils, and basic landscaping and garden design.

Individuals who complete the training become certified Master Gardeners and assist AgriLife Extension through community education in horticulture. Volunteer hours may be applied to a variety of approved projects discussed during training.

Classes will be conducted from 1–4:30 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday from Jan 5 to mid-March unless otherwise noted. Most class instruction will be given at the Angelina County Extension office at 2201 S. Medford Drive, Lufkin, located next the Angelina County Farmers Market.

Acceptance to the class is based on the person’s willingness to volunteer and the completeness of their application. Master Gardeners support the community by providing information and advice on gardening and landscaping, providing technical assistance, supporting the local green industry and being involved in a variety of horticulture-related community service projects.

Submission of an application is not automatic acceptance into the class.

Interns completing classroom training and passing the final exam will be required to complete a minimum of 70 hours of volunteer service toward youth and/or adult education outreach their first year, and 20 hours annually thereafter.

Class size is limited and the deadline for submitting the application is Friday, December 30.

A registration fee of $150 is payable in full on the first day of class. Applications are available online at http://angelina.agrilife.org/ and select publications. A completed application can be emailed to cw-sims@tamu.edu or mailed to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Attn: Cary Sims, 2201 S. Medford Dr, Lufkin, Texas 75901.

A background check is required on all applicants participating in the Master Gardener program.

For more information, contact Cary Sims at 936.634.6414 ext. 102.
