Strong Bench Play Leads AC over BPCC
A mere two nights after suffering a heartbreaking, one-point loss to a nationally ranked team, the Angelina College Lady Roadrunners hit the floor on Wednesday determined to get back on the winning track.
Behind 35 combined points off the bench, AC did so in convincing fashion, racing past the Bossier Parish Community College Lady Cavaliers 84-52 at Shands Gymnasium.
Derrica Gilbert’s basket and the bonus free throw at the 7:46 mark of the first quarter – along with five straight points from Zaraya March – helped ignite a 17-2 scoring run, and AC’s ladies would never lead by fewer than double digits the rest of the way.
Sumaiyah Abdur-Rahim came off the bench to lead the Lady ‘Runners in scoring with 18 points. Jakayla Parks also came out of her seat to finish with seven points and 14 rebounds. Gilbert and Lovietta Walker scored 14 points each, Zaraya March finished with nine points and three assists and Aaleyah Jones chipped in another seven points.
The Lady ‘Runners also finished with a 56-39 edge in rebounding, scoring 19 second-chance points off 23 offensive boards.
Ma’Kaila Lewis led the Lady Cavs in scoring with 21 points. Faith Robinson finished the game with 16.
The Lady Roadrunners (14-6, 4-5) will travel to Kilgore College on Saturday, with game time scheduled for 2 p.m. at Masters Gymnasium in Kilgore.
