Construction Occurring on Lufkin Loop, Nacogdoches U.S. 59

Date:

Signs To Be Replaced Around Lufkin Loop

Contractors will begin Tuesday to reset and replace large signs around SL 287 in Angelina County.

South Ranger Construction, Galena Park, will serve as contractor for the $183,683 maintenance contract that is scheduled to complete in about three months, weather permitting. As work progresses, motorists will experience lane closures at sign replacement locations.

A total of 33 signs and sign bridges will be replaced including signs indicating direction of travel and exits at Business 69 (Kurth Drive), US 69 (Tyler), SH 94 (Frank Street), SH 94 (Hudson, Groveton); US 69 (Huntington, Woodville), FM 58 (Chestnut Street), Abe Martin Stadium (Lufkin High School), Angelina County Airport, South First Street, US 59 (Nacogdoches) and US 59 (Houston).

“The updated signs will more efficiently indicate exits and direction of travel as local residents and out-of-town visitors travel through and around Lufkin by way of State Loop 287,” said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer for the Lufkin District. “We are urging motorists to be aware of the delays caused from single lane traffic. Prepare to slow down and allow for extra time around the loop as this work progresses.”

Motorists should prepare for delays as they approach work zones located around SL 287 and be aware that equipment and workers are working near the lane of traffic. Respect all barricades and signage. Remember traffic fines double when workers are present.

All work schedules are subject to change in inclement weather. For a complete list of statewide closures, visit drivetexas.org.

Traffic To Be Moved on U.S. 59 in Nacogdoches

Motorists should prepare for a traffic switch in a major construction project beginning next week on US 59 near Spradley Street in Nacogdoches.

Contractors will be moving US 59 southbound traffic to the newly constructed concrete pavement near the Spradley Street area. Cross traffic at Spradley will remain closed and Webber Construction, contractor for the $14 million project, will be working to construct the intersection at Spradley.

For those motorists traveling west on Spradley Street, they will be required to turn right (northbound) on US 59. Motorists traveling east on Spradley will be required to turn right (southbound) on US 59. Motorists traveling on US 59 will only be able to turn right onto Spradley from either direction. Once intersection improvements are completed, the cross traffic movement will be restored at Spradley Street.

Motorists should also be alert to excavation work in the area throughout the week that will require temporary lane closures leading to the SL 224 Eastbound entry ramp on US 59 North.

This project, a part of the US 59 Corridor Master Plan, is currently in Phase I and will enhance safety and mobility. It is expected to be completed in Spring, 2017, weather permitting. Project improvements include raised medians north of Spradley Street to SL 224; U-turns at Spradley Street and near SL 224; sidewalk construction on both sides of US 59; and reconfiguring the US 59/SL 224 intersection that will allow enhanced turning movements at a signalized intersection.

Motorists are advised to reduce speed and stay alert through all construction areas, being careful to watch for workers and moving equipment. Traffic fines double when workers are present.
