Softball is a spring sport. That is, unless you’re a young lady who can’t wait that long to put the gloves and bats to work.

With more area schools forming middle school teams to serve as feeders for the high school programs, fall now means softball will get an earlier start than ever.

And what better place to play some of these games than at the home of a national champion?

The Angelina College Lady Roadrunner softball team will for the next several weeks be showcasing middle school games every Tuesday at Roadrunner Complex on the AC campus. This past week, Hudson and Central squared off on the diamond, with AC softball players present to assist in the proceedings.

AC softball associate head coach Barbi Mattson said the events are a way to express gratitude for the community support the Lady Roadrunners receive each season while helping to promote the ever-growing sport of softball.

“This is a way for us to give back to the younger players in the area,” Mattson said. “They’ve been great in supporting our Lady Roadrunner teams these past few years, and we want to do our part to show they’re appreciated.”

Scheduled games at AC include the following:

Sept. 20 – Hudson vs. Waskom, Diboll (5:30/7 p.m.); Sept. 27 – Woden vs. Waskom, Huntington (5:30/7 p.m.); Oct. 4 – Hudson vs. Waskom, Huntington (5:30/7 p.m.); Oct. 11 – Central vs. Huntington, 6/7 p.m.; Oct. 18 – Central vs. Hudson (5:30/7 p.m.).
