AC Athletics Weekly Update

Here’s your wrap-up for this past week, along with this week’s schedule. AC’s soccer teams suffered a pair of heartbreaking losses to nationally ranked Tyler teams on Wednesday, but bounced back with big wins over Blinn College on Saturday.

In addition, AC Softball held its first-ever Alumni Game Sunday at the Lady Roadrunner softball complex in Lufkin.

AC SOCCER:

Both AC Soccer teams suffered excruciating heart-breaking losses on Wednesday against nationally ranked Tyler Junior College teams.

The No. 11 Lady Roadrunners, for the second time this season, pushed the No. 2 Lady Apaches to overtime before falling 1-0 – the second time the Lady ‘Runners have fallen to the higher-ranked Lady Apaches in extra periods this season.

On the same night, the No. 5 Roadrunners fell to the Apaches 2-1 on a late Tyler JC goal.

On Saturday, however, both AC teams bounced back with home wins over Blinn College. The Lady Roadrunners used goals from Marlene Flores and Emilie Dueck to blank the Lady Bucs 2-0 at the Larry Phillips Family Sports Complex on the AC campus.

In the nightcap, the No. 5 Roadrunners took down the Bucs by a 4-2 score, with Juan Lopez scoring twice and Andre Rich and Omar Mora adding goals in the win.

AC’s soccer teams will next play at home on Wednesday, Oct. 19 vs. Northeast Texas Community College.


AC BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL:

AC SOFTBALL: AC Softball hosted its first-ever Alumni Game on Sunday, Oct. 9. Several former Lady ‘Runners appeared for the gathering, which featured several former players – including some from the 2019 National Runners-up Team – along with other former Lady Roadrunners.

AC Softball next will host a Nitro 18-U squad at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Larry Phillips Family Athletics Complex on the AC campus.

AC BASEBALL: The Roadrunner baseball team will wrap up its Fall Ball schedule with home games on Tues. (Oct. 18) vs. Alvin College and a Sat., Oct. 22 home game against the Houston Thunder.

Gary Stallard
Sports Information Director Gary Stallard, who also serves as a Liberal Arts Instructor, begins his eleventh season with Angelina College. Following a career as a U.S. Marine, Stallard completed his bachelor’s degree at Stephen F. Austin University, where he majored in English and Journalism. For more than 16 years, he has worked as a sports writer/columnist/photographer for the Lufkin Daily News; he continues to contribute free-lance articles on occasion. Stallard has won several awards for writing, including the Golden Hoops Award for basketball writing in 2003, Regional Sports Writer of the Year in 2004, and the Texas Press Association’s first-place award for column writing in 2007 and in 2014. He has also done basketball, football and baseball radio and live streaming play-by- play and color commentary for an ESPN affiliate. Currently Stallard serves as play-by-play broadcaster for AC basketball, baseball and softball games. Prior to arriving at Angelina College, Stallard taught English at Lufkin High School for four years. He currently teaches Developmental Writing classes at AC. He and his wife Susan live in Lufkin.
