AC Athletics Weekly Update

AC SOCCER:

The new national rankings came out last Monday, and the polls showed the Roadrunners moving up to No. 5 and the Lady Roadrunners advancing two spots to No. 12.

Both AC teams finished a week on the road unscathed, with the teams sweeping doubleheaders at Northeast Texas Community College on Wednesday and at Jacksonville College on Saturday.

On Wednesday, the No. 12 Lady ‘Runners beat NTCC 2-0 behind goals from Liliane Clase and Audrey Gallagher. The No. 5 Roadrunners edged the Eagles 1-0 on a goal from Juan Lopez.

Saturday, the Lady Roadrunners used a solo goal from Marlene Flores to edge the Lady Jaguars 1-0. AC’s men followed with a 4-2 win, getting two goals from Simon Nyamudakarira and a goal each from Omar Mora and Francies Galdino.

AC teams face another week of road trips, with the Lady Roadrunners playing at Navarro College at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday and both teams traveling to Athens to face Trinity Valley Community College on Saturday.

The next AC home stand is on Wednesday, Oct. 5 against Tyler Junior College’s women and men. Kickoff for the women’s match is 5 p.m.

AC BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL:

Seven Roadrunner baseball players showed their mettle in this past weekend’s JUCO All-Star Game at Dallas Baptist University. Roadrunners Mason Swidersky, Peyton Fosher, Heladio Moreno, Tyler Ward, Matthew Tippie, Elian Balmaceda and Jaxon Hansen represented AC in the annual showcase.

SOFTBALL SCHEDULE: AC Softball will host a pair of fall exhibition games this week. On Saturday, AC hosts the Texas Bombers, and on Sunday, the Lady ‘Runners welcome the Cy-Fair Intruders.

BASEBALL SCHEDULE: The Roadrunner baseball team will participate in the Fall Baseball Conference Tournament on Thursday, Sept. 29 at the University of Texas-Tyler. AC will play Paris Junior College at noon and Northeast Texas Community College at 7 p.m.

DINNER AT THE DIAMOND:

The third-ever Dinner at the Diamond was a HUGE success, thanks to all those involved in the planning and execution. An estimated 650 fans participated in the fund-raiser, which generates donations to assist Angelina College students in achieving their academic goals.

Members of the Roadrunner baseball team were among the workers helping set up and break down the entire event.

Gary Stallard
Sports Information Director Gary Stallard, who also serves as a Liberal Arts Instructor, begins his eleventh season with Angelina College. Following a career as a U.S. Marine, Stallard completed his bachelor’s degree at Stephen F. Austin University, where he majored in English and Journalism. For more than 16 years, he has worked as a sports writer/columnist/photographer for the Lufkin Daily News; he continues to contribute free-lance articles on occasion. Stallard has won several awards for writing, including the Golden Hoops Award for basketball writing in 2003, Regional Sports Writer of the Year in 2004, and the Texas Press Association’s first-place award for column writing in 2007 and in 2014. He has also done basketball, football and baseball radio and live streaming play-by- play and color commentary for an ESPN affiliate. Currently Stallard serves as play-by-play broadcaster for AC basketball, baseball and softball games. Prior to arriving at Angelina College, Stallard taught English at Lufkin High School for four years. He currently teaches Developmental Writing classes at AC. He and his wife Susan live in Lufkin.
