Update From Trent Ashby

Date:

Over the last few weeks, it’s been good to spend lots of time on the road chowing down on some delicious food and visiting with folks in each of the six counties across our House district. Always mindful of those I represent, I’ve listened intently to your thoughts, ideas, concerns, and views. As I have historically done, I’ll do my best to address some of the most frequently mentioned topics in upcoming columns, while keeping you updated on events in Austin.

Additionally, I would ask that you say a prayer for the families and friends of those lost or injured in the recent school shooting in South Florida. My entire family mourns for those affected by this senseless tragedy, as no parent should ever have to worry for their child’s safety at school. With that, here’s an update from your State Capitol in Austin…

Early Voting in the March Primary

February 20th is the first day to cast your ballot in the March Republican and Democratic Primaries. Early voting, which runs until March 2nd, provides you with an opportunity to exercise your right to vote, without the long lines. You may only vote in one of the two primaries, and can expect to see races that range from a party nomination for a United States Senate seat, all the way down to local county races. In addition to the competitive nomination process, both parties will be asking voters for their opinions on a list of propositions. For more information on what to expect, visit the sites below.

Purple Heart Day

During the Revolutionary War, then-General George Washington created the Purple Heart Award for combat veterans. After years of inactivity, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt revived the award by Executive Order in 1932 and once again began awarding the medal. Each time I go to Austin, the men and women who risk their lives as members of the armed forces are a key focus of my attention, and I work to honor their service with any vote that can further support our veterans in Texas. Most recently, House Concurrent Resolution 56, of which I was a co-author, proclaimed February 22nd as “Purple Heart Day” across the state. Please join me in celebrating the duty and service of these honorable Purple Heart recipients across Texas, on what would be President Washington’s 286th birthday!
