An Update from Rep. Trent Ashby

Date:

As the pollen piles up across East Texas, so does the pile of bills waiting to be heard and voted on at your State Capitol. This past week, my colleagues and I moved closer to finalizing our budget by focusing on funding for the next biennium. I look forward to continue working  with my fellow legislators to produce a responsible budget that reflects the values of our great state. With that said, here’s the latest from Austin. . .

Legislation

I recently had two of my bills voted out of the House Committee on Ways & Means. I’m proud that both pieces of legislation began as ideas brought to my attention by constituents. The first, HB 777, would allow for certain members of the armed services in the United Sates to continue receiving an agricultural exemption while they are deployed or stationed outside of the State of Texas. The second, HB 897, would provide an exemption from sales tax for churches or religious organizations when purchasing or renting a trailer. Both of these bills were passed unanimously out of committee and I look forward laying them out before my colleagues on the House floor.

On the House floor, we voted overwhelmingly to pass HB 62, a bill banning texting while driving in Texas. I am proud to be a co-author on this bill, as I believe that this measure will not only create a uniform and consistent legal approach to distracted driving, but also help to create safer roads for Texas motorists. The House also continued its commitment to protecting children, and providing options for foster parents by unanimously approving HB 511, which would remove the deadline for the Department of Family and Protective Services to enter into permanency care assistance agreements.

Meetings and Engagements

We recently had a group of young constituents from Lufkin visit their State Capitol – many of them for the first time. Having a group of students make the long drive during their Spring Break to watch the Legislature in action gives me hope for the future of our State. It was truly a pleasure showing them around the Capitol and answering their thoughtful questions about policy and procedure.
