Editor’s Note: I met Ashley Berry nearly two years ago when I heard her speak at an event. Her story is a story of strength and something I am in awe of; she is a breast cancer survivor, a mother, and a believer. Her love of God, of her son, and of her life radiate from her. She’s a type of person you become a better person by just being around. I knew Ashley would be the best person to start our monthly series “Spotlight” with. This series will feature one person each month who is making a difference in East Texas, and we will have the enjoyment to get to know that person a little bit better! If you would like to nominate someone, please email us at info@TexasForestCountryLiving.com. Keep reading to learn more about Ashley Berry!
TFCL: Who is Ashley Berry?
Ashley: A 32-year-old certified life coach and speaker. She is the mother to the most handsome 11-year-old Caiden J., who keeps her on her toes.
TFCL: Do you consider yourself an introvert or an extrovert?
Ashley: Well, this is going to sound weird but I think I’m both. If I’m standing in front of a large crowd, I’m great. One-on-ones make me sweat, but I’m getting better. After becoming a life coach, I decided it would be a good thing to be OK with one-on-ones. Once I get to know a person it’s much better.
TFCL: What makes you feel accomplished?
Ashley: Helping others.
TFCL: What is a relationship deal breaker for you?
Ashley: Lying. Please do not lie to me.
TFCL: If you are in a bad mood, do you prefer to be left alone or have someone to cheer you up?
Ashley: Well, it kind of depends on the situation. I like to be alone for a little while so that I can process what happened and deal with it. Then, typically I’m OK. In my younger days, I would say and do whatever came to mind in anger – that’s not a good thing at all.
TFCL: Do you believe in second chances and why?
Ashley: Yes, I live on second chances. Each day is another chance to get it right. God gives us second chances freely. Why shouldn’t we?
TFCL: What’s the one thing that people always misunderstand about you?
Ashley: I am one of the most sensitive people you will ever meet. I’m just a cry baby!
TFCL: Describe yourself in three words.
Ashley: Loving, Strong, Caring. I’m sometimes very socially awkward. It depends on the setting, but over all I’m just me. You get me or nothing. I tried being someone else and it just didn’t work out too well.
TFCL: What’s an ideal weekend for you?
Ashley: At this point in life: Naps – taking a weekend long nap in a big comfy bed is ideal.
TFCL: What’s your favorite book/movie of all time and why did it speak to you so much?
Ashley: “Make It Happen” by Lara Casey. It’s all about surrendering your fears, taking a leap, and living on purpose. Two years ago when considering if I should start my own business I tried comparing myself and business to others and it did a number on me mentally. After reading this book I was able to do what only I could do: take the leap! Glad I did, the business is growing, not at the pace I would like but I have to keep taking leaps to get where I want to be.
TFCL: What was the best phase in your life?
Ashley: The never ending one of parenting. I love my kid with my entire being. I can not imagine my life without him. Though it’s tough being a single parent, female raising a male, I do the very best that I can and trust that God is leading me to lead Caiden.
TFCL: If a genie granted you three wishes right now, what would you wish for?
Ashley: For there to be a cure for cancer (and all others illnesses), for my husband to hurry up and find me, success – not like becoming rich and famous – just success in anything I attempt or set out to do. I want to make an impact on those around me.
TFCL: What are you most proud of?
Ashley: I am most proud of me! I’ve overcome a lot in the last few years. I chose not to give up but to fight. It wasn’t easy at all but all the blood, sweat, and tears are worth it. I’m still here!
TFCL: What’s your philosophy in life?
Ashley: Live in such a way that if someone spoke badly about you no one would believe it.
TFCL: What are you most thankful for?
Ashley: Oh my! I’m thankful for so many things and so many people, but I think the biggest would have to be Jesus. I know that’s the most cliche answer but for me its the absolute truth – without him I am nothing.
