In a rough, physical defensive battle, the Angelina College Roadrunners and Navarro Bulldogs scrapped their way through the first 20 minutes of Friday’s contest with neither team allowing an uncontested shot. The result was a low-scoring half, with the Bulldogs taking a 27-24 lead into the intermission.
The Roadrunners found a way through the Bulldog defense in the second half, however, and battled their way to a 74-65 win at Shands Gymnasium.
Travis Henson’s back-to-back three pointers with nine minutes to play helped pad a Roadrunner lead to double digits for the first time in the game, and AC maintained good shot selection down the stretch to stop the Bulldogs’ winning streak at three games.
Bryan Mitchell led the ‘Runners with 15 points. Mario Goggins and Gilbert Thomas added 12 points each, Nylek Cobb finished with 11 and Henson contributed eight points.
The Roadrunners also finished with a huge rebounding edge, getting 54 boards to Navarro’s 30. AC’s bench outscored the Bulldog subs 36-6.
Odessey Keeling led Navarro with 35 points. Teammate Trey Pulliam finished with 13.
The Roadrunners move to 10-5, 2-2 with the win. AC will travel to Panola College on Monday for a 7 p.m. start.
