Residents To Recieve Notice of Impending Construction in Nacogdoches

Date:

LUFKIN – Nacogdoches area residents will begin receiving notification of impending construction next week for a construction project scheduled to begin by fall on a busy city street.
FM 2609/Austin Street will be widened to a four-lane roadway from North Street to Raguet Street and demolition for that construction has already begun. The notice of impending construction will be sent to provide nearby residents and property owners key construction facts ahead of construction beginning.

The $2.9 million construction project is on schedule to accept construction bids in July.
“This project has been in the planning phase for several years,” said Rhonda Oaks, Lufkin District public information officer. “Once demolition along the right-of-way is complete, utilities will then be relocated prior to construction beginning, which we believe will be in late summer or early fall.”

TxDOT held an Open House in August 2014 and an opportunity for a public hearing in 2015 to gain input on this project that is designed to widen FM 2609/Austin Street from two to four lanes with adjacent sidewalks and ADA curb ramps to accommodate pedestrian and bicycle traffic. A traffic signal will also be installed at the intersection of Raguet Street and Austin Street. Construction should be completed in about 18 months, weather permitting. The roadway will be closed to through traffic during that time. This project is designed to enhance safety, increase mobility and alleviate traffic congestion.
