Sutherland Springs Response
It is unthinkable to imagine that a place of worship would also serve as a place of angst or worry for those attending a service on Sunday morning. Having said that, Nickie and I send our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers to the families of the twenty-six people who went to a November 5th church service in the community of Sutherland Springs and never made it home.
The man behind this heinous act is no longer with us. After firing over 400 rounds of ammunition into a crowd of innocent people, he was taken down by the heroism of a citizen who stood up to fight for the residents of the community he loves and lives in. This act of bravery saved lives and prevented further tragedy from striking at the hand of evilness.
The aforementioned group included mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, an unborn child, and nine members of a single family – all who fell victim to the deadliest shooting in our state’s history. As you come together with your families over the holiday season, please take a moment to reflect on God’s love for each of us and remember to lift up prayers for the families affected by this tragedy.
Sergeant Wade Daniel Wilson Memorial Highway
This Veteran’s Day, I have the honor of unveiling signs which will forever honor an American hero from our House district. During the most recent legislative session, I carried and passed a bill into law that would designate a 17 mile portion of Interstate 45 in Leon County as the Sergeant Wade Daniel Wilson Memorial Highway.
From Centerville, Sergeant Wilson joined the Marine Corps out of high school. After three deployments to Afghanistan, Wilson earned a reputation among his peers as a revered and fearless leader. He was killed while defending his platoon from enemy fire in Afghanistan on May 11, 2012. Soon thereafter, the President of the United States awarded Sergeant Wilson the Silver Star for his conspicuous gallantry.
Please join me in thanking Sergeant Wilson, his family, and all of the other brave men and women who selflessly serve our country and protect the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. As members of the United States Armed Forces, these courageous service members deserve our gratitude not just around Veteran’s Day, but throughout the entire year.
