Showing versatility in their offensive approach, the Angelina College Lady Roadrunners used a lot of long ball and a little of the short stuff to sweep Kilgore College 15-7 and 8-0 Wednesday in Lufkin.
Kiriany Hornberger homered in each game of the doubleheader, knocking out a solo shot in the opener and a three-run blast in the nightcap. Rachel Agnello launched an opposite-field grand slam in the first inning of the early game, and Emilee Cernosek bashed her team-leading 13th homer of the season – a three-run shot – in the late game. Nikki Whitehead also added two RBI in the second contest.
Both games ended in six innings via the mercy rule. Brette Kohring walked off the early game with a two-run double in the sixth; and Riley Garrett scored Cernosek on a squeeze play to end the game in the nightcap.
Hornberger and Leigh Luker teamed up in the circle to take down the Lady Rangers in the 15-7 win. Shelby Mixon followed in the late game with a two-hit shutout to earn her team-leading 14th win of the season, holding the Rangers hitless over the first four innings. After allowing a single to the Rangers’ Shelby East and a double to Kaitlin Hunter, Mixon settled in to retire the next five hitters in order to close out the game.
The two wins ran the Lady Roadrunners’ winning streak to six games, pushing their season record to 25-14, 13-7. Weather permitting, AC will host Paris College in a doubleheader on Saturday. Game time for the opener is 1 p.m.
