STEAM 4 KIDS: Learn to Code at the Public Library

The Judy B. McDonald Public Library invites children ages 7 to 11 to participate in a STEAM 4 KIDS program on Thursday, September 15th at 5:30 p.m.  Kids will find that anyone can learn how to program a computer.  In this class, participants will learn the basics of coding using Scratch, an open-source computer programming language designed with children in mind. Plus, the library celebrates the power of libraries and digital learning in our community on this special day established by the governor, Power Up at the Library Day. Please call 559-2970 to register.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) programs are offered for children ages 7-11 this fall.  By offering such programming, the public library strives to provide an informal environment where children can become engaged in fun, hands-on learning activities in the STEAM disciplines. STEAM programs will be offered every Thursday from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. All programming is free to the public, but we ask that you register ahead of time so we will be prepared with adequate materials.

A La Noche Cenamos (Dinner Tonight Series) at the Public Library

Claudann Jones of the Texas A&M Agriculture Extension Office will offer two free cooking classes at the Judy B. McDonald Public Library. The classes focus on making traditional ethnic foods healthier and more economical. The first class is A La Noche Cenamos (Dinner Tonight) Mexican Food on Friday, September 16th at 6:30 p.m. The second class will feature Mediterranean food and will be held on Saturday, October 15th at 2:30 pm.

The classes are part of the bilingual programs offered by the public library so instructions will be given in English and Spanish. No matter which language you speak, be it English or Spanish, this class will be a lot of fun as we all learn new cooking techniques and new vocabulary words! Registration deadline for this free class is September 13th. Call 559-2970 for more information.

Lego Club at the Public Library

The Judy B. McDonald Public Library will host its monthly Lego® Club on Saturday, September 17th at 2:30 pm for children ages 5-17 years. The library has thousands of Lego® pieces so kids can build whatever they can imagine. The program is held the third Saturday of each month at 2:30 pm and no registration is required. For more information, please call 559-2970.

Special Story Time: Read with a Dog at the Public Library

McDonald Public Library is excited to announce a very special addition to the weekly story time for preschoolers.  Read with a Dog will be Wednesday, September 22nd at 10:00 a.m. with special guests from the Humane Society of Nacogdoches County.   “We can hardly wait for this extraordinary opportunity to share with kids and families the importance of caring for pets,” says Crystal Hicks, assistant library director. “We’re thrilled that the Humane Society is facilitating the participation of local therapy dogs and their handlers.”  Story Time is held every Wednesday, requires no registration and is always free.
