Asphalt Application Scheduled for US 69 South Project

Date:

Contractors will begin placing the final hot mix asphalt (HMA) surface on US 69 South in coming days that will have traffic slowed through a major construction project. Motorists are urged to obey all traffic control as this phase of the project begins.

The work is part of the US 69 widening from two to four lanes from Huntington to Zavalla/Jasper County line, which is divided into three construction projects.

The HMA application is scheduled from Huntington to FM 844. Work is scheduled to begin in the center turn lane and continue southward. The HMA application will be placed on all lanes. The asphalt application is scheduled to take up to two weeks, weather permitting. This $11 million construction project is scheduled for completion in December, 2018. Pinto Construction, Nacogdoches TX, is the contractor.

Work will also continue on the US 69 South project from FM 844 to Zavalla as crews prepare for construction of the overpass and additional widening of the roadway. This $68 million project is estimated to be completed in July 2022. Johnson Brothers Corp., a Southland Company, Roanoke TX, is contractor. Motorists should stay alert to trucks entering and exiting the roadway.
The third section of the US 69 South construction will be located from SH 63 in Zavalla to FM 1270. The $35 million project is scheduled to be approved for funding in June 2019.
US 69 South is heavily traveled and motorists are urged to stay alert for slowing traffic and/or flaggers that may be stopping traffic near and through these work zones.

“We can’t stress enough how motorists should use caution throughout these work zones,” said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer. “From day to day, depending on the work, traffic could be redirected, stopping in front of you or suddenly slowing down. Please remain alert and reduce speed as this work continues.”
