Angelina College graphic arts students will exhibit their work beginning Nov. 1 in the Angelina Center for the Arts gallery. A reception will be held from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Libby Stapleton’s Editing and Layout classes will show booklet covers, résumés and business cards with logos that the students designed. This class is the beginning design class for visual communications for both graphic arts and journalism students. The students begin by learning about the history of design, typography and the principles of design before they start applying those concepts to their designs.

Jan Anderson-Paxson’s Photography I students will exhibit black and white photographs that were exercises in using the creative controls of the camera, controlling depth of field, understanding directional lighting, and photographic composition. Students learn basic darkroom skills such as processing film and printing photographs. “We will also do something new this semester and create a traditional silver gelatin photograph using the darkroom but from a image from a smartphone,” Anderson-Paxson said.

Anderson-Paxson’s Digital Publishing II class will also show work completed during the fall semester in the exhibit. Some of their projects consist of producing an original calendar, designing a flyer for the Fine Arts Preview Day and creating an advertising campaign for a company, service or product.

Reg Reynolds’ Digital Arts I students will show works created by combining images created with analog machinery and Photoshop. Students in this class learn basic design concepts and how to use computer imaging software and hardware.

Reynolds’ Digital Imaging II students will also exhibit works. Their projects include a self-portrait as a superhero and images created to tell the story of a local company, LufTex Gears. Students participated in location shoots and meetings with company representatives.

The Design and Applied Arts program prepares students for employment as entry-level graphic artists with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform desktop publishing, photography, computer layout, graphic arts, digital imaging, webpage design and video.
