Angelina College Community Services Offering Safety Classes

LUFKIN, TEXAS, July 18, 2018 – Affordable safety training is available to the public at a greatly reduced cost thanks to a grant from the Texas Mutual Insurance Company and Angelina College’s Community Services Division. Courses offered are CPR for Healthcare Providers, Forklift Operator, Safe Sitter, and Shooting Skills for Fun & Safety. The courses will be held at the Angelina College Career & Technical Center – Crockett.

The CPR for Healthcare Providers course certifies students in basic life support techniques for infants, children and adults. Tuition is $20 and includes cost of a textbook, which students will receive when they register at the Crockett Center. The course will be offered Aug. 7 from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

The Forklift Operator course is an eight-hour National Safety Council (NSC) course that covers OSHA regulations, lift truck design and operating principles; pre-shift safety inspection and preventive maintenance; worksite inspections, picking up a load, delivering a load, and applying lift truck operator skills. Participants receive hands-on experience as well as classroom instruction. After completing the course, students will receive their NSC card. The course is scheduled for Aug. 10 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The cost is $20.

The Safe Sitter Youth Camp is a four-day camp for students ages 8-18. After completing this camp, students will be prepared to babysit children in unsupervised settings. In a fun, interactive environment, students will learn skills needed to respond appropriately to medical

emergencies as well as beginning employment skills. The camp will be offered July 23-26, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Students should bring a healthy snack and a sack lunch. The camp fee of $30 includes all supplies and a camp t-shirt.

Shooting Skills for Fun & Safety Youth Camp teaches student ages 13-18 new shooting skills and helps them improve existing skills in a safe environment. This one-day camp is taught by an instructor from the Angelina College Police Academy. The camp is scheduled for July 19, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Students should bring an Airsoft gun, safety glasses, and a healthy snack and a sack lunch. The camp fee is $10.

Typically, the fees for these courses can be as high as $130. Angelina College is able to offer these courses at greatly reduced costs thanks to a grant from Texas Mutual Insurance Company.

Nancy Reynolds
Nancy Reynolds has proudly served Angelina College since 2000. She began serving as AC’s communications coordinator in 2005. Prior to that, she was the public relations specialist. Reynolds earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Stephen F. Austin State University. She taught speech courses as an adjunct for AC for eight years. As communications coordinator, Reynolds’ responsibilities include the following: writing news releases, directing social media, collaborating with the marketing team, managing the Angelina College brand, coordinating publications, managing web content, coordinating internal communications and providing media training. Reynolds lives in Lufkin with her husband Reg. They have two sons, one daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, and one cat.
