Angelina College will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a series of events for students and the community.
The celebration will kick off Aug. 30 with the Food Truck Fest and Community Involvement Fair from 5-9 p.m. in front of the Administration building. There will be free, family-friendly activities, such as bounce houses, a photo booth, and face painting. DJ Justin Seitz will be on hand to provide music. Representatives from community organizations such as Region 5 Prevention Resource Center, the Family Crisis Center of East Texas, and the City of Lufkin will have booths set up. A variety of campus organizations will also have booths set up. The Student Government Association will be accepting non-perishable donations for the Student Food Pantry.
Angelina College will open its Center for Nonprofit Leadership in September. The center is being created to provide educational programs and support services to nonprofit organizations. Other services provided by the new center include training for both emerging and tenured leaders as well as other resources tailored to serve the particular needs of nonprofit organizations. The center will maintain a “board bank,” a listing of individuals who are qualified and willing to serve with nonprofit organizations in East Texas.
September and October will be months of service with AC faculty and staff volunteering at community organizations. Nonprofits participating are the Family Crisis Center of East Texas, Gateway Community Partners, Goodwill, Harold’s House, J.D.’s Center of Hope, Junior Achievement, Katherine Sage Temple Day Care Center, Lufkin State Supported Living Center, Neighborhood Strong, Pregnancy Help Center of Lufkin, and Winnie Berry Humane Society.
Two lucky students each semester will receive their tuition at 1968 prices when the Business Office hosts the “Pay Your Tuition Like it is 1968” drawings Sept. 12 and Jan. 30. Watch for details on the AC website, angelina.edu.
The Visual and Performing Arts Department will celebrate AC’s 50th anniversary by producing the first play performed at Angelina College in 1968, “Bell, Book and Candle.” This enchanting play about a spellbinding romantic triangle is as magical as it is entertaining. Performances are scheduled for Oct. 11-12 at 7:30 p.m. in Temple Theater. A 2:30 p.m. matinee performance is set for Oct. 13. A 50th anniversary musical showcase and reception will precede the Oct. 13 performance, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
The Student Affairs Division will host “The Beat Goes On: Food, Music, and Fun” Oct. 18 from 10:45 a.m. until 1 p.m. in front of the Student Center. The event will feature the music and fashions of the 1960s. A free lunch will be provided to attendees.
Two celebrations are planned for Jan. 29 at 5:30. The School of Science and Mathematics will hold an open house to showcase their newly remodeled science labs, made possible through the generous support of the T.L.L. Temple Foundation. Additionally, there will be a ribbon cutting for the new campus store and coffee shop.
The School of Health Careers will host the “Blast from the Past” picnic March 21 at 11:30 a.m. by the Health Careers I building. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served. Guests will be able to view the “Fifty Years of Health Careers at Angelina College” photo display in the Health Careers I building.
An end-of-semester carnival, bonfire, and barbecue is planned for May 2 and will be held in the area between the Industrial Technology building and the softball field. The event will be hosted by the School of Arts and Education, the School of Business and Technology, the Office of Student Life, and the Student Government Association.
AC’s Small Business Development Center and the Community Services Division will host a golf tournament May 17 at Crown Colony Country Club.

Nancy Reynolds has proudly served Angelina College since 2000. She began serving as AC’s communications coordinator in 2005. Prior to that, she was the public relations specialist.
Reynolds earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Stephen F. Austin State University. She taught speech courses as an adjunct for AC for eight years.
As communications coordinator, Reynolds’ responsibilities include the following: writing news releases, directing social media, collaborating with the marketing team, managing the Angelina College brand, coordinating publications, managing web content, coordinating internal communications and providing media training.
Reynolds lives in Lufkin with her husband Reg. They have two sons, one daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, and one cat.
